Graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1989, Rich received a commission in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant of Infantry. In 1997 Rich left the military with the rank of captain and managed a portfolio of commercial properties in the greater New York City area for his family. In 2008, owing to certain dislocations inside his own family, Rich left the world of commercial real estate and found himself as the single father of five young children. For the past eleven years he has devoted himself to raising those children, the oldest of whom (his son Richard IV) is serving very presently with the U.S. Army Special Forces along the East African littoral where he is engaged in counter-piracy operations.
Rich has served in various offices of the United Reformed Church. He has spoken before numerous groups, both civic and academic. He is an avid woodworker and model railroad enthusiast. Additionally, along with several of his children, Rich shares a passionate interest in geology; he and his children can be found on many weekends out conducting field trips with the Museum of Natural History.
