Rajan S. Mathews was named the 13th president of Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary in May 2021.
From 2010 to 2020, President Mathews was the Director General of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the Telecom Communications Industry Association in India, leading a $36 billion advocacy group representing the industry in India and around the globe.
His remarkable leadership background also includes various senior executive positions including Chief Executive Officer, President, Chief Financial Officer, and Vice President-Controller of companies such as AT&T, Telargo Inc., Afghan Wireless Communications, Call Sciences Inc., Beatrice Foods International and Columbia Tri-Star Pictures.
While at AT&T, Mr. Mathews was named President and CEO of Birla AT&T, then AT&T’s largest international investment. There he introduced digital mobile telephony services in India, building out and operating one of India’s largest Global System for Mobile Association networks. A licensed certified public accountant, his professional career began with Price-Waterhouse Coopers where he audited and consulted with Fortune 100 Companies such as Phelps-Dodge, IBM, Exxon, and Colboro. He has considerable expertise in international operations having managed and operated companies in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Afghanistan and India. He has spearheaded fundraising initiatives resulting in more than $1 billion in public and private equity, debt, private placements and new venture funding.
Mr. Mathews served as President of Woodstock School, a premier residential international baccalaureate world school in India, after previously serving as the school’s Finance Committee Chair. In the past several years, he has been instrumental in raising over $50 million for other schools and charities.
Devoutly living out his faith and deeply involved with local churches, Mr. Mathews has also been a speaker at family and youth conferences in the United States and abroad. He holds board memberships with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Far East Broadcasting Association.
President Mathews and his wife, Grace reside in Manhattan. They are members of Stone Hill Church in Princeton, NJ where he is a board elder. They are the parents of two daughters—Kavita and Nithya, who is married to Jeffy Joseph and the grandparents of one grandson, Avi.
Nyack College currently serves more than 2,000 students in its undergraduate, graduate, doctoral degrees programs offered on site and online. In addition to its main campus in New York City, an extension site is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Nyack is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. Nyack’s Alliance Seminary is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.
