David would not have survived the most dangerous period of his life without the friendship of Jonathan, a friendship marked by constancy, transparency, and self-sacrifice. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” If you can’t bare adversity without friends, and you can’t experience life without adversity, then it follows that friends are one of life’s necessities. In the Gospel we find our ideal friend in Christ: the one who laid down his life for his friends.
