On June 17, 2015 Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old white supremacist, murdered nine African Americans at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. Rev. Anthony Thompson’s wife, Myra, was leading a Bible study that night and lost her life.
Ms. Polly Sheppard was one of only two adult survivors of the shooting. After witnessing the brutal murder of her friends, Roof approached and asked, “Have I shot you yet?” He told her that he would let her live to tell the story.
Two days after the massacre, Rev. Thompson, Ms. Polly, and other suffering families stunned the world when they faced Dylann Roof and offered him forgiveness.
