John Guest was our “guest” speaker on June 4. John was an NCS speaker back around 2001, and he will be the featured speaker at Camp-of-the-Woods during NCS Week this summer (August 14-21). During his talk, he recited a poem engraved near the old clock on Chester Cathedral in England. Many in attendance asked for a copy of the poem.
John’s talk began with a detour. After Jim Lane shared some thoughts on the importance of Energy Groups following the suicide of our Vermont brother Leo Stephens, John shared how his own father’s suicide had impacted his life. John urged all present to get involved in Energy Groups–to be in close relationship with other men. With the time remaining, John then came back to his original topic. When he finished, you could hear a pin drop. I urge you to listen to the recording by clicking here.
During John’s talk, he read the following poem from the old clock:
FROM THE OLD CLOCK
CHESTER CATHEDRAL, ENGLAND
When as a child I roamed at will,
Time stood still.
When as a youth I laughed and talked,
When at last I became a man,
Then as I older grew,
Soon I will find while passing on,
Will Christ have saved my soul?
Personally, I am somewhere between running and flying. Thankfully, I know the answer to the question.
