Chris Kay shares three key leadership lessons that have helped him turn around several organizations in very different industries. Kay explains that these lessons come from what he believes to be the greatest leadership book ever written–Paul’s letter to the Philippians. The lessons Kay emphasizes are: (1) act with humility, (2) use the right performance metrics and (3) focus on the good.
Nuggets from Chapter Friday 2/19/16 – Terry Botwick
Our February 19 Chapter Friday contained quite a few nuggets to remember (or catch-up on if you missed it) about how we truly integrate our work into our faith (the talk is available by clicking HERE).
Terry Botwick shared his own faith journey and what he has come to believe after 30 years in Hollywood trying to figure out how to integrate his work into his faith. He shared:
- About his commitment to use “story” to communicate the nature of God, challenge people and bring lasting change.
- About his commitment to approach culture-engaging filmmaking in a commercial way.
- What he believes to be some common misconceptions of evangelical Christians regarding films, including that film is an effective evangelistic tool and that “wholesome” and “Biblical” are the same thing.

Impacting the Culture Through Film (Terry Botwick – 2/19/16 – NCS New Canaan)
Terry Botwick shares his own faith journey and what he has come to believe after 30 years of trying to figure out how to integrate his work into his faith. He believes that engaging the culture through film is imperative for followers of Jesus Christ and can (and should) be profitable as well. Terry is committed to using “story” to communicate the nature of God, challenge people and bring lasting change. He is also committed to approaching culture-engaging filmmaking in a commercial way. In explaining the current market for “Christian films”, Botwick addresses what he believes to be some common misconceptions of evangelical Christians regarding films, including that film is an effective evangelistic tool and that “wholesome” and “Biblical” are the same thing.
Nuggets from Chapter Friday 2/5/16 – Sajan George
Last week’s Chapter Friday’s contained quite a few nuggets to remember (or catch-up on if you missed it) about identifying your “calling” and becoming the “you” God designed you to be (the talk is available by clicking HERE).
Sajan George, founder and CEO of Matchbook Learning, shared the story of how a movie started him on a journey that led to leaving his very successful consulting career (in the middle of a recession) for an “idea”. Sajan also transparently shared how this leap led him to face some big fears and how God’s love brought him through. Here are a few highlights:
- Sajan has come to see “calling” as a journey rather than a destination–a way for us to become better and better versions of ourselves that get closer and closer to God’s best vision for us.
- He finished by walking through a framework for exploring the unique path where your God-given excellence (skill), a redemptive edge (a need in the world that you can impact) and frustrations you may be feeling (a sign of your passion) converge.
- In pursuing a vision, we will undoubtedly have to face fears–faith is our way through.
- As we pursue a God-given vision, we should look for the elements of “story” so common to the best movies and novels.

Understanding Your Calling (Sajan George – 2/5/16 – NCS New Canaan)
Sajan George, founder and CEO of Matchbook Learning, shares the story of how he found himself in a role leading turn-around efforts at some of the nation’s largest school districts, and then how a movie started him on a journey that led to leaving his very successful consulting career (in the middle of a recession) for an “idea”. The idea was to start a not-for-profit organization committed to figuring out how to use technology to turn-around the bottom 5% of the nation’s schools. Sajan transparently shares how this leap led him to face some big fears and how God’s love brought him through.
Sajan has come to see “calling” as a journey rather than a destination–a way for us to become better and better versions of ourselves that get closer and closer to God’s best vision for us. He also walks through a framework (see below for a link to a PDF of Sajan’s framework) for exploring the unique path where your God-given excellence (skill), a redemptive edge (a need in the world that you can impact) and frustrations you may be feeling (a sign of your passion) converge.
