Our brudder Doran Wright gives his first message after turning 60 just the day before. Doran shares a new revelatory insight into the meaning of “grace” and the “narrow gate”. It is a message of hope. It is a message that takes the pressure off. It is a message we all need to hear.
Living in a “VUCA” World (Larry Julian – 10/24/14 – NCS New Canaan)
When Larry visited on October 24, 2014, it had been EXACTLY six years since his first visit on October 24, 2008 (when we were meeting at Woodway Country Club). His topic in 2014, “Leading in a VUCA World (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous)”, was just as timely as his topic in 2008**. Larry shares very transparently about his own struggles and the lessons he learned and wisdom he gained in those six years. In reminding us of how our heavenly Father is a God of second chances and delights when we overcome, Larry challenges us in these challenging times to find our river Jordan, stick a toe in and trust that God is with us.
**On that day in 2008, we were in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had just been taken over, BofA was buying Merrill Lynch for $50 billion, Lehman Brothers had filed for bankruptcy just a month earlier, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were to become regulated bank holding companies and on September 29 the Dow dropped 778 points–its single-worst point drop ever. We were all pretty confused and worried. It was perfect timing to hear from Larry–he was coming out with “God is My Coach: A Business Leader’s Guide to Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World”
Being All You Were Made To Be (Col. Richard Toliver – 10/10/14 – NCS New Canaan)
In addition to sharing some insights on the challenges facing America and a reminding us that God is our ultimate Commander in Chief, Colonel Richard Toliver tells the remarkable story of how God “woke him up” with a bolt of lightning when he was in a fighter jet at 20,000 feet. A decorated Top-Gun pilot, Colonel Toliver talks about his traumatic childhood and the incredible passion and focus on becoming a fighter pilot that lifted him out of his circumstances. He also transparently admits how that singular career passion made him lose sight of the things most important in his life–his wife, children, friends and God. Surviving the lightning bolt brought him to a new life in Jesus. He reminds us that whatever we may have encountered in life and whatever mistakes we may have made, we each have a God-designed purpose that our heavenly Father wants us to realize, but in order to realize that purpose we must first take any unresolved issues and burdens to the Cross and leave them there, trusting that Jesus can deal with them for us. Colonel Toliver ends with the key imperative to becoming all we were made to be–we must submit our passion to God and make our passion knowing Jesus and choosing to love God with all our heart.
Navigating Transitions in Life (Phil Zaldatte – 4/13/12 – NCS New Canaan)
Phil Zaldatte shares how God redirected his life to focus on helping people through transitions. Phil explains the stages of transition, how to recognize, navigate and survive each stage, and how God uses transitions to bring us toward His purpose for our lives.
The Importance of Relationships and Commitment in Christian Faith (John Guest – 6-4-10 – NCS New Canaan)
John Guest’s talk began with a detour. After Jim Lane shared some thoughts on the importance of Energy Groups following the suicide of an NCS brother, John shared how his own father’s suicide had impacted his life. John urged all present to get involved in Energy Groups–to be in close relationship with other men. With the time remaining, John then came back to his original topic. The focus of his message was on the importance of making a real faith commitment–getting off the fence. When he finished, you could hear a pin drop. John Guest
