We have all faced experiences in which we were severely tested. Admiral Allen refers to these as “crucible experiences” such as divorce, death of a spouse or child, cancer, betrayal, addiction or dramatic financial loss. Sometimes these experiences are a consequence of our decisions and sometime not. In all cases, life is essentially out of control. Our character and faith are at once revealed and strengthened. Ed says: “Sixteen years ago, I experienced four crucible experiences within a three-year period. How I dealt with each of these and what I earned is the essence of my story that I will share.” Admiral Allen explains strategies for surviving and learning life’s trials.

Pleasure is not a sin. Ravi Zacharias explores pleasure and the line between pleasure and excess. He warns about how the world will try to draw us to excess and shares transparently about what he missed as a Dad from a life on the road. In the end, he concludes that we must seek a balanced life that is a life of worship, because it is worship that brings coherence to our life.

With great energy and classic NCS humor, Jason Pankau helps us understand the Great Commission by going deeper into what it means to be a disciple. Sharing his own struggles and the role mentors have played in his life, Pankau explains what it means to be in a “covenant” friendship and why we need mentors and mentees in order to grow in our faith. Jason’s insights can help every NCS brudder gain a better understanding of the transparent and authentic friendships that are at the core of NCS and NCS Energy Groups.

The Importance of Relationships and Commitment in Christian Faith (John Guest – 6-4-10 – NCS New Canaan)

John Guest’s talk began with a detour. After Jim Lane shared some thoughts on the importance of Energy Groups following the suicide of an NCS brother, John shared how his own father’s suicide had impacted his life. John urged all present to get involved in Energy Groups–to be in close relationship with other men. With the time remaining, John then came back to his original topic. The focus of his message was on the importance of making a real faith commitment–getting off the fence. When he finished, you could hear a pin drop. John Guest
